Where are the first time buyers?

Perhaps they are living with you.  I left home at nineteen and never looked back.  I was twenty-five when Susan and I bought our first house in Nashville, Tennesse.  That was undoubtedly many years ago but it is still amazing to me how times have indeed changed.  According to a just released report done by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in the year 2000 some 12% of young adults ages 24 – 35 lived with their parents or parents-in-law. That may seem like a lot, it does to me, but by 2012 that number had jumped to  greater than 19%.  The report points out that data from the Bureau of Labor illustrates a direct correlation between a rise in the unemployment rate within this age group and the increase in numbers of young adults living with their parents.  With this age group traditionally representing a significant portion of the first time home buyer market it is easy to imagine the impact on home sales.   Encouragingly the most recent statistics point to a decline in the unemployment rate within this age group and in some parts of the country a declining percentage of young adults living with their parents; good news for the housing market and all those involved I would imagine.
